Psalm 91 and its deeper meaning

Psalm 91 prominently features angels, specifically highlighting God's command for them to protect and guard believers. Verses 11-12 state, "For he will order his angels to protect you wherever you go. They will hold you up with their hands so you won't even hurt your foot on a stone". These verses emphasize the ministry of angels as agents of God's protection for those who trust in Him.

Key aspects of angels in Psalm 91:

  • Guardians:

Psalm 91:11 describes angels as guardians, entrusted with the task of protecting believers in all their ways.

  • Helpers:

The psalm emphasizes that angels are not just passive watchers, but active participants in God's care for His people, holding them up and preventing harm.

  • Ministers:

Psalm 91:11 also highlights that angels are ministering spirits, sent to serve and aid those who are heirs of salvation.

  • Visible and Invisible:

Angels can be visible, as seen in 2 Kings 6 with Elisha's servant, but they also operate unseen, often unseen guarding and protecting believers.

  • Not to be Feared:

While some angelic appearances in the Bible can be awe-inspiring or even frightening (as in the case of the Angel of the Lord who struck down the Assyrian army in 2 Kings 19), Psalm 91 focuses on the comforting and protective role of angels.

  • A Legion of Angels:

Psalm 91:11-12 speaks of God "ordering" his angels, implying a host of them, not just one, working on behalf of believers.

  • Not a Replacement for God:

Psalm 91 consistently emphasizes that God is the ultimate refuge and strength. Angels are presented as His agents of protection, not as a replacement for God's own power and presence.

  • Not all Angels are Good:

While Psalm 91 focuses on the good angels that God sends, it's important to remember that there are also fallen angels or demons that oppose God.

Other Psalms Mentioning Angels:

  • Psalm 34:7 mentions the "angel of the Lord" encamping around those who fear God, rescuing them.
  • Psalm 103:20 encourages believers to bless the Lord, "all his angels," recognizing their role in praising God and carrying out His will.
  • Psalm 104:4 speaks of God making the winds His messengers and His ministers "flaming fire".
  • Psalm 148:2 speaks of angels praising God.
  • Psalm 8:5 speaks of humans being made "a little lower than the angels".
  • In Psalm 34:7, the "angel of the Lord" is described as a guard who surrounds and defends those who fear him.
  • Psalm 103:20-22 encourages blessings upon the Lord, with all of his angels, who praise Him and do His will.
